Canton Council Approves 13.5-Acre Annexation for Heavy Industrial Use; Board of Control OKs Road Salt Contract with Price Hike

The Canton City Council and the Board of Control took several notable actions last week, including the approval of a 13.5-acre annexation for heavy industrial development and a road salt contract that reflects a nearly 47% price increase from last season.

City Council – June 29

Council voted unanimously (12-0) to annex 13.525 acres at 2050 and 2232 Central Ave SE, zoning the property as I-2 Heavy Industry District and assigning it to Ward 4. The move clears the way for industrial use on the site.

In other business, council authorized a $5,129 moral obligation payment to the law firm Black-McCuskey-Souers & Arbaugh (12-0) and approved a professional services contract with Yates Technology Inc. (12-0).

Two police grants were accepted: a $7,000 Walmart/Sam's Spark Good Local Grant (11-0, one abstention) and a $44,144.90 Ohio OCJS grant (12-0).

Council also adopted a resolution endorsing an opportunity zone redesignation by voice vote.

Board of Control – June 30

The Board of Control approved a road salt contract with Cargill, Inc. at $85.26 per ton for the 2026-2027 winter season, up from $58.14 last year. The 3-0 vote covers the city’s winter road-treatment needs.

Additionally, the board authorized a $188,471 professional services agreement with CTL Engineering for the 4th St. SE Bridge Rehabilitation project (3-0).

Coming up

The Board of Control meets again on Tuesday, July 7, to consider two change orders closing out the Large Diameter Sanitary Sewer Cleaning & Televising 2025 Project. Both items reduce contract costs: a $280,788.46 reduction with Equix Integrity, Inc., and a $166,829.20 reduction with Burgess & Niple, Inc.
