Council takes up zoning code amendments; utility board reviews lead line grants

The Holland City Council gathered Wednesday to consider final adoption of text amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance and hold a public hearing on terminating a brownfield reimbursement agreement for the Black River Flats project. Results of those votes were not available as of press time.

In other city business, the council also discussed the FY26 Strategic Plan and Business Plan Final Report and mayoral appointments to city commissions through voice votes. A revocable license agreement for projecting signs at 5 W. 8th Street was on the table, though no actions were immediately confirmed.

City Council members spent June 24 on a van tour of past, present and future housing projects during a study session. No votes were taken.

HBPW reviews water rates and lead grants

The Holland Board of Public Works examined internal financial reports for the electric, water, wastewater, and broadband divisions during a June 22 study session. Directors also studied a grant program outline to help customers replace private lead service lines, evaluated water rates for once-through cooling users, and assessed high-strength waste limits at the Holland Area Water Reclamation Facility. No formal action was taken.

Board of Appeals hears setback requests

The city Board of Appeals convened June 25 to rule on two requests for zoning relief. At 21 W. 26th Street, the board weighed a special exception and variance to build a new home with side and front setbacks less than required on a substandard lot. At 473 W. 22nd Street, a variance would allow an addition set back 3.1 feet from a secondary street line where 16 feet is required. Decisions were not immediately released. The board also conducted a study session before the public meeting and approved draft minutes from May 28.

Downtown development board discusses food truck pilot

The Principal Shopping District Board met July 2 to review and adopt a budget for FY27, discuss financial reports, and consider pausing a food truck pilot program after survey results were presented. Members were set to confirm a $10,000 annual sponsorship from Gentex Corp. for the Street Performer Series and note an exclusive $1,500 sponsorship from Jean Marie for Sidewalk Sales. The board also reviewed plans for Spring Fling 2027 and potential ordinance changes to allow food trucks in the downtown area. No formal votes were confirmed.
