Taylor City Council to weigh $4.3M waste contract, new fee for non-emergency fire calls

Taylor’s City Council will consider a compost and rubbish collection contract worth more than $4.3 million and the first reading of an ordinance allowing the city to charge for non-emergency fire department responses when it meets this week. Meanwhile, the Planning Commission last week took up a proposal to vacate a public alley near Telegraph Road, and a rezoning request is scheduled for later this month.

Planning Commission considers alley vacation

At its July 1 meeting, the Taylor Planning Commission considered a request to vacate a 20-foot wide public alley on the east side of Telegraph Road between Mercier and Eureka. The alley is part of Patterson’s Telreka Subdivision, adjacent to lots 96-112 and 479-485. The proposal included retaining all utility easements after the vacation. Minutes from the meeting have not yet been published, so the outcome of the vote is not available.

City Council to vote on major contracts, new cost-recovery ordinance

The City Council meets twice this week: on July 6 and July 7. Both agendas include a consent agenda with fiscal year 2026-2027 blanket purchase agreements for multiple departments. The largest item is a compost and rubbish collection agreement worth up to $4,361,645. The council will also consider purchasing general liability and property insurance from Travelers totaling $1,949,715. Other consent items include water, sewer, and public works contracts.

Under regular agenda items, the council will hold a first reading of an ordinance to add cost recovery for non-emergency fire department responses. This would allow the city to bill for services such as lift assists, which are not emergency calls. The ordinance would be added to the Fire Code. The council is also scheduled to enter closed session to discuss risk management claims, then vote on settlements for two claims: case numbers 2306-20 and P6152400474. Another regular agenda item is the sale of a city-owned parcel (ID #60-064-02-0412-000) for $2,500 plus closing costs. Additionally, the council will vote on a $239,966 Wayne County HOME funding agreement for homebuyer assistance programs.

Planning Commission to hear rezoning request

On July 15, the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing and vote on rezoning two vacant parcels at the northwest corner of Wick and Holland Roads. The parcels, identified as #60-019-99-0029-000 and #60-019-99-0028-000, are currently zoned single-family residential (R-1C). The applicant is seeking a change to light industrial (I-1).
