Charter school budget, rezoning requests top recent Cape Coral agendas

The Cape Coral Charter School Authority Governing Board considered a tentative budget for the upcoming fiscal year, while separate panels weighed rezoning requests for more than 38 acres across the city, according to recent meeting agendas.

Charter school budget

The Charter School Authority Governing Board on June 23 was set to vote on a tentative fiscal year 2027 budget and a mid-year budget amendment for fiscal year 2026. The agenda also included affiliation agreements with Florida SouthWestern State College and Florida Gulf Coast University for student training, as well as approval of a mental health assistance allocation plan and an active assailant/shooter response and family reunification plan for the 2026-2027 school year. Minutes from the meeting have not yet been published.

Rezoning hearings

The city’s Hearing Examiner on June 23 took up three city-initiated rezoning requests. The largest involves 23.14 acres at 11300 Chandler Grove Drive and 2327 Trafalgar Parkway, currently zoned Lee County and R1. Staff recommended approval for a new zoning designation. A separate request sought to rezone 2.54 acres at Tropicana Park from Mixed-Use Seven Islands (MX7) to Single-Family Residential (R1), along with a companion future land use map amendment. A third item would rezone 13.38 acres at 2501 SE 17th Avenue from Commercial to Institutional. Again, minutes are not yet available.

Planning and zoning actions

On July 1, the Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing on a request to change the future land use designation for a 6,250-square-foot lot at 1526 NE 13th Avenue from Single-Family Residential to Multi-Family Residential. The commission also considered an ordinance to eliminate the Hearing Examiner position and establish a Special Magistrate to conduct quasi-judicial hearings, as well as approval of June 3 meeting minutes and a citizen input period. Outcomes of these items are pending release of meeting minutes.
