Tree removals approved; boards weigh 21 Dwight Road projects and budget structure
The Longmeadow Tree Warden approved the removal of two residential shade trees after a public hearing, while several town boards and task forces met over the past two weeks to discuss development proposals at 21 Dwight Road, municipal budget structure, and building reuse plans. Most meetings have agendas available but minutes not yet published.
Public Shade Tree Hearings
The only meeting with official minutes published was the June 2 Public Shade Tree Hearings. The Tree Warden approved removal of a Norway maple at 26 Whitmun Road, with one-for-one replacement required, and approved removal of a red maple at 160 Lynwood Avenue. According to the minutes, both homeowners sought removal for driveway expansion and tree health concerns, respectively. No objections were raised by the public or neighbors.
21 Dwight Road Development
Two separate boards addressed projects at 21 Dwight Road. On June 24, the Conservation Commission held a public hearing on a Notice of Intent for constructing two commercial buildings at that address. The commission also reviewed the DCR Gasek Management Plan, discussed a policy for memorial structures on conservation land, reviewed a soils report at Gasek Farm, and scheduled an executive session for a land purchase.
On July 1, the Planning Board held a public hearing for a 7,246-square-foot medical office and a 13,067-square-foot daycare at 21 Dwight Rd. The same meeting included a public hearing for a 900-square-foot attached accessory dwelling unit at 523 Laurel St, a budget discussion, election of officers, and an executive session regarding litigation for Case #2025-0205.1.
Minutes for both meetings have not yet been published.
Town Manager Budget Task Force
The newly formed Town Manager Budget Task Force held two meetings. On June 22, the group was scheduled to elect a chair and vice chair, review its scope and deliverables, and receive an overview of municipal and school budget structure. On June 30, the task force was set to classify all town and school services — including public safety, public works, core education, special education, and athletics — as mandated, required, or discretionary, and to discuss service level expectations and data gaps.
The School Committee, at its June 23 meeting, was scheduled to appoint a representative to the Town Manager Budget Task Force as part of its reorganization. New members Bisrat Abebe and Matthew Casale were to be introduced, and Dr. Peter Gillen was to be introduced as principal of the new Longmeadow Middle School. The committee also planned an executive session to discuss collective bargaining strategy on a Memorandum of Understanding.
Future Building Use Task Force
The Future Building Use Task Force met June 24 to review building scope-of-work and cost information from the Five Year Capital Plan, discuss updated signage proposals for three properties, and review a public input plan. Members also discussed a new FAQ concept for the task force webpage.
Finance Committee
The Finance Committee met three times — June 23, June 25, and July 2 — to interview candidates for appointment and, at the final meeting, to vote on candidate appointments. No other financial or legislative items were listed on the agendas.
Historic District Commission
The Historic District Commission met June 22 to review May 12 meeting minutes, receive a Building Use Task Force update, discuss the Google Maps/MACRIS Editing Project, and discuss preparations for the Longmeadow 250th anniversary.
Coming up
Future Building Use Task Force — July 8: The task force will review department head responses to information requests and discuss a preliminary Request for Proposals for Old Town Hall reuse, including zoning restrictions and abutter notifications. The group will also update its public input plan and develop an FAQ document for its web page.
