Opportunity for input on decisions affecting your water
quality
City Council meetings are held the first & third Thursday at the City Council Chambers, 103 N
3rd Street in Cornell.
Health Information
Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small
amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that
water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can
be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's safe drinking water hotline (800-
426-4791).
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general
population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing
chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other
immune systems disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections.
These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by cryptosporidium
and other microbial contaminants are available from the Environmental Protection Agency's safe

7:00 p.m. Mayor Mark Larson called the council meeting to order at the City Council Chambers. The
meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence honoring all individuals that
have or are protecting our freedom. Minutes taken by Deputy Clerk-Treasurer Rosseter.

Semanko reported on the Library Committees updates. They have decided let they would like to add
a 30 x 49 ¾ addition to the Library Building. Asked about getting Councils approval to move
forward. Also, asked about their door being replaced Smith is going to look into this for them.
July 3rd tabled, presenter not present.
Bianca Jordan presented information on a grant to have a community garden. She also shared her
ideas and information on what would be needed to get this done. Needed is a Leadership team, 15
people interested to participating, a location, and a group to file for the grant. The city cannot file for
the grant. She was going to approach the Legion and the Lions to see if they would be interested.

6:30 p.m. Mayor Larson and Council Members met with Seth Zieger, Wildlife services USDA and
Zach Thon from Brunet Island State Park to discuss options for goose nuisance that exists in both the
State Park and the Mill Yard Park. Seth gave presentation on options for controlling the goose
population which included a round-up when geese are molting and flightless. Also putting corn oil
on eggs in nests preventing them from hatching. Council will discuss further and possible cost
sharing with the State Park.

MARCH 19, 2026
6:00 p.m. The City hosted an informational open house meeting relating to the Bates Street CDBG
Reconstruction Project. Kevin Oium and Brian Chapman from Cedar Corp. reviewed the upcoming
project with residents in the project area. CDBG funding was discussed along with timeframe that the
contractor Haas Sons was considering. We Energies is currently replacing gas mains in this area and
Haas Sons is looking at starting in early April finishing up by the end of June except for the second
blacktop lift scheduled for next Spring or early summer.

MARCH 5, 2026
7:00 p.m. Mayor Mark Larson called the regular council meeting to order at the City Council
Chambers. The meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence honoring all
individuals that have or are protecting our freedom. Minutes taken by Administrator/Clerk-
Treasurer DeJongh.
Council members present: Debra Semanko, David Hoel, Floyd Hickethier, Steve Turany, Bill Kvapil
& Tim Smith.
Guests present: Police officer Chris Erickson, Dan Osborn & Amber Nagel.
Motion Hickethier, Seconded Kvapil to accept the agenda as printed. Carried 6 ayes.
Motion Hickethier, seconded Kvapil to approve the regular council meeting minutes of February 19,
2026. Carried 6 ayes.
Turany reported on Finance Committee meeting held earlier at 6:30 pm. Met in closed session first
and then discussed in open session the emergency siren at the old fire hall and infrared asphalt
recycling equipment to prolong the life of blacktop roads. Bruce Johnson, owner of old fire
department property is willing to continue to allow the siren, tower and controls on the property for
$50/ month. DeJongh was advised to schedule a free demonstration of the infrared asphalt recycling
equipment.
Dairyland Power Cooperative is offering a $1000 Cornell student scholarship because of its electric
power supply partnership with Cornell Municipal Electric Utility. Guidelines will need to be done.

discussed fuel services proposed for the City Shop for fueling city shop and police vehicles.
Dairyland Power is providing a $1000 student scholarship for a high school student going to continue
their education and a customer of Cornell Electric Utility.
Lucas Kohls was at meeting to discuss his application for a solid waste hauling permit. His business
would drop off roll-offs to interested parties which then would be hauled to local landfills and
dumped. The roll-offs would be stored at 315 South Street an industrial zoned parcel.

Dan Osborn reported that Cookie’s in Lake Holcombe would be having a St. Patrick’s Day Parade on
March 14, 2026.
County board supervisor Pam Guthman provided update on matters at the county level. Background
in nursing, Pam expressed deep concerns with rural healthcare and the direction it was going along
with the concerns of burning of fossil fuels and the possible ill effects on our atmosphere.
Semanko reported on recent Library Board meeting. Board has kicked off a fundraising effort to do
an addition on the current library to address space issues.
Turany reported that the Finance Committee met earlier in the evening in closed session.

Dan Osborn, representing businesses that he has ownership in, presented ideas on how to make the
community more of a tourist destination during the holiday season. He displayed some large
Christmas bulbs that he picked up that could be used. He also had suggestions for the Welcome
Signs entering into Cornell. Council members thanked him for his input.
Turany reported that the Finance Committee met earlier in closed session before this meeting.
Ginna Young explained the plans for this year’s farmers market in addition to 3 days during the
summer having food trucks.
Motion Kvapil, Seconded Turany to change the Mill Yard Park pavilion rental to $75 for Friday –
Sunday rental and leave the rates the same for the remaining days including
