Extra Mile - Ashton Smith
Ashton Smith is in his first year with Bentonville Schools, serving as a commissioned school security officer at Evening Star Elementary. As one might imagine, Evening Star families were thrilled to welcome. They loved knowing another level of protection had been layered on to the campus security plan. Officer Smith began his role patrolling halls, securing entries and watching over the campus. Soon though he saw another opportunity.
Amy Parton, an Evening Star mother, wrote that her son, Miles, was still finding his footing when Officer Smith extended his friendship.
“CSSO Smith built a relationship with my son using Miles’ imagination, sense of purpose and fun,” Amy wrote.
During the holidays last year, CSSO Smith and Miles set …

Extra Mile Award - Tony Atzbach
Tony Atzbach is a professional bus driver in Bentonville Schools. He was nominated for the Extra Mile Award by more than a dozen parents and colleagues after a remarkable display of professionalism and courage.
On January 30, 2026, Tony was still a rookie employee with Bentonville Schools. He’d been on the job for just eight months when a young student slumped to the floor.
“I thought she had fallen asleep, but she didn’t respond to me,” Tony said.
Tony didn’t panic but picked up his little bus rider and laid her carefully on a seat, placing a backpack under her head.
Tony called 911 and immediately notified the transportation team.
While giving updates on the second grader’s breathing, Tony …

Casey Henry - Extra Mile Award
On November 24, 2025, Casey Henry, the assistant ladies' basketball coach at Bentonville West High School, made the trip with his student-athletes to Cabot High School for what he expected to be a routine game.
In the second quarter, a West player landed a nice three-pointer and started the defensive shuffle down the court.
“As we moved down the court, I noticed one of our players looking toward the far baseline, holding her face in her hands and appearing distressed. I looked in the same direction and saw an official lying face
down on the floor,” Coach Henry narrated.
Coach Henry didn’t think. He reacted just as he had many times before.
“I served as a Combat Medic in the United States Army for eight years,” Coach shared.
“During my active duty, I wa …

Extra Mile recipient - Eric Barnett
We all enjoy compliments. Encouraging words validate a job well done, whether it’s from a spouse, supervisor or a friend. But what is it about a kind word from a child? Maybe it’s because they don’t hold back. Their words, for better or worse, are unfiltered and honest. Brooke Brewer knew a teacher at The International School at Mary Mae Jones was doing something right when her daughter couldn’t stop complimenting him.
Brooke wrote that her daughter, Blaire, counts down the days until she can count beats in Mr. B’s music class. Eric Barnett, a seven-year teacher at Bentonville Schools, is ad …
