Subject: Long Beach Fire Department Bunker Gear
At this time the Long Beach Fire Department is in need of replacing outdated and non-
NFPA complaint bunker gear for members of the department. This safety equipment is necessary
to protect the members of the department that are entering fires and/or called upon other types of
hazardous environments. Under the Federal OSHA Law 1910.156 for Fire Brigades, the
employer shall provide at no cost to the employee protective clothing while performing fire
fighter duties.
Funding for this purchase is available in the Fire Department budget account for Fire
Safety Equipment, 3410.54502. The purchase falls under the state bid process and the
manufacturer, Honeywell First Responder Products and our distributor, Hi-Tech Fire and Safety
Inc., are listed on the state contract list, #23361. NFPA standards dictate that firefighter safety
equipment has a ten year life span from the date of manufacture. Some items being replaced by
this purchase are past that recommend time by a few years and others are damaged and in need of
replacement for the safety of the members. We are currently in need of 19 jackets, pants and
boots for a total cost of $78,318.81.
