and Nicole Hadenfeldt have won the Innovation in Technology Award: SPLS
Performance Management Dashboard. They will be honored this year at the AzLA
100th Celebration at the AzLA Conference in Tucson.
• We are excited to announce Brue Barton has been hired as a Library Assistant and
Alyssa Aey has been hired as a Library Aide. We appreciate all the work they did on
the retro project and really happy to have them on board in a permanent position.
• We received a generous gift of 4 Quest Playaway Tablets from the Friends' of Surprise
Libraries. Two at Surprise Regional, one at Asante, and one at Hollyhock.

• The soft open went very well at Hollyhock! The staff put together a community art
project and had tons of swag out. We had 175 people join us and it was such a blast.
Thank you to our Commissioners who joined.
• The Grand Opening ceremony was a success as well. HSCV expected around 300
people, and we easily had 500-600 people show up! So many people are excited about
bringing all of these resources together in one location.
• We are excited to announce Sophia has been promoted from Library Aide to full-time
Library Assistant! We also have a full-time Library Assistant at Asante, and the Library
Aide position at Regional. We have already found our candidates but are still working
on finalizing their paperwork.
• Tale Trail is back at Asante on Friday, October 30 from 6-8pm. Staff are already
creating some amazing things for the event.

• The City of Surprise is partnering with Vitalant Blood Donation to host a blood drive
from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, inside the Community Room in
Surprise City Hall, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza. Community members who want to
participate are encouraged to schedule an appointment through the Vitalant
website using the Blood Drive Code p1T62. Although walk-ins are welcome, those
with an appointment will be given priority. As a thank you for your willingness to
help others through blood donation, Vitalant is providing special gifts through its
Donor Rewards program.

• Hollyhock Library is officially closed for the next week! We are excited to be moving
into the Surprise Community & Resource Center. Staff are sad for the original
Hollyhock Library but very excited for our new adventure in the new space.
• Library of Things kits have been popping off! We have introduced some really fun
outdoor activities for when the weather cools like bags for cornhole in the park and
metal detectors. Until the heat changes, we are continuing to add more American Girl
Dolls and Tonie Boxes!
• We are hosting Reflecting America: A Semi Quincentennial Living History speaker
event in November. We have posted a call for speakers to come and talk about their
time in the service, exceptional American stories, and family heritages throughout our
country's 250 years.
• Library Director, Kelsey Lamphier, won the Gabe Zimmerman Community Builder
Award.

• The City of Surprise is expanding its partnership with West Valley Community
Center to offer one of the Valley’s most affordable before- and after-school
programs for local families. The program provides transportation to and from the
following locations: Surprise Elementary School, West Point Elementary School,
and Thompson Ranch Elementary School. Families can also apply for full and
partial scholarships to help keep before- and after-school care affordable. For rates,

Commissioners Patrick Campbell and Madalyn Volling attended the NCAA Division II Tennis
Championship banquet, where they had the opportunity to speak during the event. They shared
that it was a well-attended and enjoyable evening and expressed their appreciation for being
invited. Both commissioners commented that it was a great experience to interact with the
student-athletes and coaches and to be part of such a prestigious championship event.
Staff Reports
Kasey Peterson, Parks and Recreation Administrator, provided an update on the City's
Independence Day Celebration scheduled for Saturday, July 4, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. She
noted that the fireworks display will begin at 8:45 p.m. and highlighted a new feature this
year—a lake barge that will enhance the fireworks show. Kasey also shared additional event
details, including live entertainment provided by a DJ and participating food trucks celebration.
