Galveston College board considers budget, tax rate, health sciences center, land purchase
The Galveston College Board of Regents met three times in the past two weeks to consider a range of items, including the fiscal year 2026-27 budget, a proposed property tax rate, a health sciences education center, and a real estate purchase. No minutes have been published for any of the meetings, so the outcomes of these items are not yet known.
Facilities Committee (Aug. 12)
The Facilities Committee met to discuss the purchase of real property and an update on the Health Sciences Education Center (HSEC) project. The committee was scheduled to determine recommendations to the Board of Regents on both items. An update on student housing and other facilities projects was also on the agenda.
Regular Meeting (Aug. 12)
Later that day, the Board of Regents held its regular meeting. The agenda included consideration of the Facilities Committee's recommendations on the HSEC project and the real property purchase. The board also considered ratifying acceptance of the TRIO Upward Bound Grant for 2026-2027 and a Nursing Shortage Reduction Program grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Other items included proposed salary schedules, part-time classification and compensation, adjunct and overload pay, and stipends effective September 1, 2026, as well as board committee appointments for the 2026-2028 term.
Special Meeting (Aug. 19)
The board held a special meeting and public hearing to consider adopting the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27 and the proposed 2026 property tax rate for maintenance and operations. The agenda included a taxpayer impact statement. The board was scheduled to hear public comments and then vote on the budget and a resolution levying the tax rate.
