Canyon Commission weighs $28.8M budget, property tax hike; minutes pending
The City of Canyon Commission met twice in the past two weeks to consider its largest financial decisions of the year, including a proposed $28.8 million operating budget and a property tax rate increase. However, minutes from those meetings have not yet been published, so final outcomes are not confirmed.
Budget and property tax
At its Aug. 10 meeting, the commission held a public hearing and considered Ordinance No. 1257, which would adopt a $28,820,663 operating budget for fiscal year 2026-2027 — a $1,204,663 increase over the prior year. The budget includes a $283,665 (4%) increase in property tax revenue, which would require a separate ratification vote.
Key proposed spending increases in the budget include:
- $129,012 for police department wage increases and step-pay schedule adjustments
- $55,000 for three part-time positions to launch the Fire Department's Community Wildfire Protection Plan
- $35,000 for repairs to the Fire Department's ladder truck
At a second meeting on Aug. 12, the commission held a public hearing on Ordinance No. 1258, which would set the 2026-2027 ad valorem tax rate at $0.53413 per $100 of property valuation. The agenda also included consideration of the Board of City Development's 2025-2026 budget.
Other commission business
The Aug. 12 agenda included action on a contract with Azavar/Localgov for short-term rental (STR) services, and Resolution No. 19-2026 approving a negotiated settlement with Atmos Energy regarding the company's 2026 rate review. The commission also scheduled an executive session covering legal, real estate, personnel, and economic development matters, including the positions of City Engineer and Municipal Court Judge.
Library board
The Canyon Area Library Board met Aug. 19. Its agenda included a summer reading report, fall programming, discussion of the Promethean Board, and the Friends of the Library Flea Market scheduled for Oct. 10, 2026. The board also noted that one rural board member term expires in December 2026.
Economic development corporation
The Canyon Economic Development Corporation met Aug. 20 to vote on a proposed 2026-2027 budget and approve July 2026 financial statements. No specific budget amount was listed in the agenda, but attached financials showed total assets of $2,806,236.92 as of July 31, 2026. The board also held an executive session on economic development projects, legal matters, and real property, and reviewed operational updates including downtown revitalization and the closing of Table Top Tavern.
