Cape May Council to consider beach restrictions, grants; Planning Board reviews cell site
This week's roundup covers meetings held from July 28 through August 4. All recent meetings are listed as agenda only, with minutes not yet published, so no decisions have been reported. The most consequential item on the docket is a City Council ordinance introduction that would restrict certain activities on the Promenade and Beach and adjust the curfew.
City Council (August 4)
The City Council introduced Ordinance 606-2026, which would amend city code to prohibit certain acts on the Promenade and Beach and adjust the curfew. The consent agenda included several resolutions:
- Resolution 290-08-2026: inserting the 2025-2026 Coastal Resiliency Grant into the budget.
- Resolution 291-08-2026: inserting the 2026 Neighborhood Preservation Program grant.
- Resolution 295-08-2026: authorizing Change Order #4 for construction of the new Police Department headquarters.
- Resolution 296-08-2026: authorizing a shared services agreement with West Cape May for Uniform Construction Code services.
A presentation from the Cape May Housing Authority was also scheduled.
Planning Board (July 28)
The Planning Board met to consider a resolution for a Verizon Wireless facility at 1045 Beach Avenue (Block 1101, Lot 7, within the right of way). The board also reviewed two applications from Adis Inc. for site plan approvals and variance relief at 1317 Beach Avenue (Block 1146, Lots 6-24): one for a pergola with waiver of requirements and substantial benefit variance relief, and another for phasing approval with hardship and substantial benefit variance relief. The board also approved minutes from June 9 and June 23 meetings and discussed payment of bills.
Environmental Commission (July 28)
The Environmental Commission discussed old business including a Planning Board report and city manager updates. New business items included group feedback, Dune Day, the Monarch Pledge, and the Nature Center of Cape May. A discussion on stewardship and the natural world was also on the agenda.
Historic Preservation Commission (July 30)
The Historic Preservation Commission held a special alignment workshop only, with no formal action taken. Discussion focused on revising the HPC's Historic Design Standards and application materials, and clarifying the adoption process for those changes.

The Cape May Planning Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, 2026 has been cancelled. No applications or decisions will be considered at that meeting. Documents and records remain available for review at City Hall.
