Denison Boards Eye Tourism Funding Cut, Downtown Grants, and Zoning Changes
Denison advisory boards and commissions met throughout the second week of July, with several items carrying financial or land-use implications for residents. Minutes have not yet been published for any of the recent meetings, so outcomes of those agenda items are not yet confirmed. The most consequential dollar figure on the horizon is a potential $50,000 reduction in tourism sponsorship funding, scheduled for discussion at the July 23 Main Street Advisory Board meeting.
Recent Meetings: Agendas Posted, Outcomes Pending
Four public bodies posted agendas between July 7 and July 15. Because minutes have not been published for any of these meetings, what was actually decided remains unclear from the available record.
Historic Preservation Board (July 7): The board was scheduled to consider a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior improvements at 424 W. Main Street, identified as the Rialto Theater. The proposal included replacing a rear staircase railing, repainting portions of the brick facade and trim, and adding an ADA-compliant entrance ramp.
Convention and Visitors Bureau Advisory Board (July 13): The agenda listed approval of June 8 meeting minutes, consideration of a tourism grant for the Bluebonnet Norfolk Terrier Club, and discussion of establishing a new Discover Denison Attractions Committee. Reports on tourism, Main Street, and parks were also scheduled.
Planning and Zoning Commission (July 14): The commission was set to discuss a text amendment to the zoning ordinance to comply with House Bill 2844, which relates to mobile food vendors (Case No. 2026-61ZO). A separate item involved a right-of-way abandonment request adjacent to 2301 Brookhaven Drive (Case No. 2026-53ROW).
Sister Cities, Inc., Board of Directors (July 15): The board planned to set meeting dates for the 2026–2027 Sister Cities Advisory Board schedule, review the itinerary for Denison's portion of the 2026 Sister Cities Exchange Program, discuss promotion strategies for the upcoming school year, and consider potential candidates for advisory board appointment.

Three meetings are scheduled for the week of July 21.
Historic Preservation Board — July 21: The board will consider Certificates of Appropriateness for exterior improvements at two downtown properties: 319 W. Chestnut (Case No. 2026-024H) and 312-316 W. Woodard (Case No. 2026-025H). Members will also vote on approving minutes from the July 7 meeting.
Main Street Advisory Board — July 23: The board will discuss a potential $50,000 reduction in tourism sponsorship funding, the largest dollar figure on any current agenda. The meeting also covers planning for the Good Morning Downtown networking event scheduled for August 18, a possible postponement of the Meet Me on Main celebration to the third week of September, and strategies to encourage later business hours for downtown retailers. Minutes from the June 25 meeting are slated for approval.
Main Street, Inc. — July 23: Meeting at City Hall, this board will consider grant applications for the Music on Main concert series. Public comments are limited to three minutes per speaker. Minutes from the June 25 Main Street Inc. Board meeting are also up for approval.
