West Monroe roundup: Board OKs 1% sales tax, infrastructure grants; Planning Commission acts on zoning
The West Monroe Board of Aldermen voted 5-0 on July 21 to continue a 1% sales tax and authorize roughly $1.5 million in grant applications for water and sewer improvements, making the tax renewal and infrastructure funding the most consequential decisions of the past two weeks.
Board of Aldermen — July 21
The board approved Resolution 889 and Ordinance 5623 to levy the continued 1% sales tax, following a June 27 election. The vote was 5-0.
Members also authorized grant applications for two infrastructure projects: $500,000 for the Glenwood Drive Water Main and $1 million for the Frost Commercial Parkway Water & Sewer project. Both passed 5-0.
Two construction contracts were awarded, each by a 5-0 vote:
- $135,000 to Ryan Watson Construction for Downtown Gateway Signage.
- $172,173 to Amethyst Construction, Inc. for Kiroli Park Entrance Improvements.
The board approved Ordinance 5624 (5-0) updating "Part 11: Crimes and Offenses" in the City's Code, and Resolution 890 (5-0) appointing positions for the West Monroe Housing Authority.
A request for development proposals for a riverfront restaurant project was authorized 5-0. The board tabled a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement with the West Monroe Downtown Revitalization Group to an uncertain date, also on a 5-0 vote.
Planning Commission — July 20
The Planning Commission approved a request to place a mobile home at 617 Riggs St in an R-1 district.
A proposed zone change from R-1 to B-3 at 2801 N 7th St was ruled unfavorable. That property is the same site the Board of Aldermen is scheduled to take up at its August 3 meeting.
The commission tabled a zone change request from B-3 to B-1 at 1412 Ridge Ave and approved minutes from its June 22, 2026 meeting.
Board of Adjustments — July 27
The Board of Adjustments approved VAR 26-20000002 for 2406 Nye St, reducing the required setback from 25 feet to 5 feet to allow a new structure. The board also approved minutes from its February 23, 2026 meeting.

The Board of Aldermen meets August 3 with several items on the agenda:
- A public hearing to rezone 2801 North 7th Street from R-1 to B-3.
- A resolution to adopt a Residential Antidisplacement and Relocation Assistance Plan.
- An agreement with the Louisiana Department of Health to use the West Monroe Sports & Events Complex as an emergency shelter.
- Bids for the Stella Street Gravity Sewer Main Rehabilitation, estimated at $275,000.
- Change Order No. 3 for the Crosley Street Sanitary Sewer Improvements, a reduction of $24,677.80.
