Wendell Board Adopts FY 2026-27 Budget, Approves Rezoning and Downtown Grant
The Wendell Town Board of Commissioners adopted the FY 2026-27 budget and approved a $50,000 Downtown Improvement Grant for Mac's Restaurant at 37 N Main Street, both by unanimous 5-0 votes, at its July 14 meeting. The board also approved the purchase of property at 0 Martin Pond Road and rezoned approximately 8.97 acres from Rural Agriculture to a Neighborhood Center Conditional District in a 3-2 vote.
FY 2026-27 Budget and Downtown Grant
The board approved the FY 2026-27 budget, along with the budget ordinance, capital project ordinances, fee schedule, and pay plan, all by 5-0 votes. An agenda amendment and the consent agenda were also approved 5-0.
The board voted 5-0 to approve a $50,000 Downtown Improvement Grant for 37 N Main Street, identified as Mac's Restaurant. The board appointed members to the Planning Board, Downtown Development Committee, and Parks and Recreation Commission. It entered a closed session under N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(5) and resumed regular session afterward, both by 5-0 votes.
The board authorized the purchase of property at 0 Martin Pond Road and designated the Town Manager and Town Attorney to act on the town's behalf, approved 5-0.
Rezoning and FY 2026 Budget Amendment
In a separate set of actions at the same meeting, the board approved the rezoning of approximately 8.97 acres from Rural Agriculture to a Neighborhood Center Conditional District. That vote was 3-2.
The board adopted the FY 2026 Annual Operating Budget Amendment #6 by a 5-0 vote.
Additional 5-0 approvals covered several contracts and policies:
- Park naming application after Tookie Gullie
- Fee waiver for the Children with Disabilities Resource Fair
- Parks & Recreation Inclement Weather Policy
- Selection and authorization for RFP #677-PR26-04, the Parks, Recreation, Open Space Plan
- Selection and authorization for RFQ #677-TM26-07, Downtown Streetscape Design
- Consent Agenda
UDO Update Steering Committee Meets
On July 15, the Wendell UDO Update Steering Committee held a special-called meeting. According to the agenda, members reviewed frequently asked questions about the Unified Development Ordinance update, discussed kick-off questions, received a presentation on the update process overview, and planned next steps for the revision. Official minutes for this meeting have not yet been published, so no decisions or votes from that session are available to report.
