Hondo Council approves 48-cent tax rate, sets Sept. 14 hearing
The Hondo City Council on Aug. 10 approved a proposed property tax rate of 48 cents and set a public hearing for Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in City Hall chambers. The council also voted unanimously to approve an ordinance amending Chapter 4 of the city code to modernize procedures for abating substandard buildings, shifting demolition decisions to the municipal judge. All votes were unanimous (5-0).
Tax rate and building ordinance
The council approved the 48-cent tax rate and scheduled the public hearing. It also approved ordinance 1324-08-26, which updates building regulations for substandard structures. The consent agenda, which included minutes and appointments, was approved unanimously.
Other recent meetings
The Hondo Economic Development Corporation met Aug. 18 with an agenda that included approval of Q3 financials presented by CFO Chris Hill, discussion of a possible purchase of the property at 1708 Ave M, a public hearing on that property, and an executive director report covering budget, sales tax, marketing, and programs. Minutes have not yet been published.
The Airport Advisory Board met Aug. 20 to review year-to-date financials and fuel sales, receive status updates on Hangar Row G improvements and the T-Hangar drainage project, and consider new business items including a tenant social gathering and a sport plane fly-in. The board also received a presentation from the Epilepsy Foundation. Minutes have not yet been published.
Coming up
The City Council will meet Aug. 24 to discuss a potential ordinance regulating tree trimming, removal, and vegetation within the city. The agenda includes approval of the Aug. 10 council minutes and reappointment of Ashley Lowe and Roger Hernandez to the Hondo Economic Development Corporation Board for two-year terms. Public comments are limited to three minutes per speaker.
The Board of Adjustments will meet Aug. 25 to elect a chairperson and consider a variance request from property owner Percy Esquivel to reduce the required front-yard setback from 25 feet to 11 feet 9 inches for a new single-family residence at 802 17th Street. The property is zoned R-3 Residential and is approximately 0.964 acres. The board may also enter executive session for legal, real estate, personnel, security, or economic development matters. Public comments are accepted via email up to one hour before the meeting.
