Joliet committees recommend $290K fire contract, sewer work

Joliet's Public Safety and Public Service committees made several recommendations last week that will go to the full City Council for final approval. The most consequential was a unanimous recommendation to award a $290,376 contract for fire department medical and fitness evaluations, along with a series of infrastructure contracts for sewer and lift station work.

Public Safety Committee (Aug. 4)

The committee voted 3-0 to recommend awarding a $290,376 contract to Rock Valley Health for 2026-2027 Joliet Fire Department medical and fitness evaluations. It also recommended an ordinance amending the 2026 annual budget for operational expenditures and a resolution authorizing an intergovernmental agreement with Will County 9-1-1 ETSB to accept surcharge grant funds. Both recommendations passed 3-0. The committee approved minutes from its July 7 meeting, also 3-0. Discussion items on the Stryker building, 6 corners issues, and tent encampments were not acted on.

Joliet Council Accepts $3.5M IDOT Grant for I-80 Bridge Community Plan

Joliet City Council accepted a $3.5 million Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) grant for the I-80 Des Plaines River Bridge Community Plan on July 21, alongside approving more than $2.3 million in infrastructure contracts and an annexation.

The Joliet City Council approved more than $610,000 in Public Works vehicle purchases and a $50,000 economic development membership payment at its July 6 pre-council meeting, while several committees and boards advanced fire equipment purchases, zoning changes, and snow removal program expansions in meetings over the past two weeks.

The pre-council meeting on July 6 produced the largest batch of decided items. Zoning Board of Appeals: Three permits approved, new chair elected

The Zoning Board of Appeals elected Jane McGrath Schmig as Chair on July 16 and approved three petitions, all by 5-0 votes with one member absent: a variation of use for administrative offices at 317 S. Reed St (Petition 2026-29), a special use permit for a resale boutique at 124 N. Ottawa St (Petition 2026-30), and a special use permit for a truck repair facility at 608 Railroad St (Petition 2026-31).

Plan Commission: Ottawa Street rezoned, Sarver subdivision deferred

The Plan Commission voted to reclassify 303 S. Ottawa Street from R-2 to R-3 zoning. The vote was 7-0, with Cox, Eulitz, Martin, Radakovich, Turk, Hammac, and Leon voting aye and Crompton absent.

The commission deferred the preliminary plat for resubdivision of Lot 6 in the Sarver Commercial Property to its August 20, 2026 meeting, by the same 7-0 vote.

Diversity and Community Relations Committee: Snow Removal Program expanded

The committee approved updated eligibility requirements for the Snow Removal Program, adding people over 80, disabled or mobility-impaired individuals, SNAP recipients, veterans, and those who live alone. The vote was 3-0. No public comments were received.
