Le Sueur County Board Tackled Land Use Plan, Drainage Hearings; Outcomes Pending
Le Sueur County residents saw a busy stretch of government meetings this month, though official minutes have not yet been published for any of the three sessions held since July 7. That means the agendas tell us what was scheduled for discussion and action, but confirmed outcomes and vote tallies are not yet available.
Board of Commissioners — July 7
The Board of Commissioners was scheduled to consider repealing the existing land use plan and adopting the Vision 2050 Comprehensive Land Use Plan, an item that would shape county development policy for decades if approved.
Also on the agenda: an action item to initiate redetermination of benefits for County Ditches 2, 31, 34, 53, 56, and 57; a work session on AIS (aquatic invasive species) funding cuts; the MDH Private Well Protect Grant RFP; approval of a county-issued credit card for Mike Thelemann of the Sheriff's Office; and a DNR presentation on strategic land asset management and shallow lake projects.
Minutes for this meeting have not been published, so it is not yet known which items were approved, tabled, or amended.
Board of Commissioners — July 15
The board held a final public hearing on redetermination recommendations for County Ditches 4, 17, 47, and 64, including outlet charges. Public comment was to be heard on each ditch before board deliberation and action.
Again, minutes are not yet available, so the board's decisions on each ditch redetermination cannot be confirmed.
Planning and Zoning Commission — July 16
The Planning and Zoning Commission was scheduled to review four land-use permit applications:
- A Conditional Use Permit for a duplex on Lot 2, Block 1, Bakers Bay Estates, Section 12, Kasota Township, located on Lake Washington shoreland.
- A Conditional Use Permit for a 255-foot wireless telecommunication tower in the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4, Section 29, Derrynane Township.
- An Interim Use Permit for a cannabis cultivation business in the N 1/2 of the NE 1/4, Section 28, Montgomery Township.
- An Interim Use Permit for a short-term private lodging rental on Lot 6, Hecht's Sioux Lookout Subdivision, Section 18, Kasota Township, on Lake Washington shoreland.
No minutes have been published, so commission actions on these permits are not yet confirmed.
Why these items matter
The Vision 2050 Comprehensive Land Use Plan, if adopted, would guide zoning, development, and conservation decisions countywide. Drainage redeterminations affect how costs for maintaining county ditches are分配 among benefiting property owners. The Planning and Zoning permits touch shoreland development, a cannabis business, telecommunications infrastructure, and short-term rentals — all issues with direct effects on neighboring property owners.
