Longmont council to weigh public safety tax options; boards review water, housing, arts items

No decisions have been finalized at Longmont's advisory boards and commissions over the past two weeks; all recent meetings were agenda-only, with minutes not yet published. The most consequential item on the horizon is the City Council's Aug. 25 vote on whether to refer a public safety tax increase to voters.

City Council

At its Aug. 11 regular session, the council considered introducing three alternative ordinances (O-2026-51, O-2026-52, O-2026-53) that would raise the city sales and use tax rate and property tax mills to fund public safety. Each option would refer the increase to voters in the Nov. 3, 2026 election:

• O-2026-53: Sales tax from 3.53% to 3.86% and property tax up to 2.44 mills

The council also held second readings and public hearings on an economic incentive agreement with Micron Technology, ranked-choice voting, council term staggering, and open space voter approval. It discussed a potential subsidy for composting services and heard an appeal of a denied setback variance at 1820 Juniper Street.

At the Aug. 25 regular session, the council is scheduled to vote on O-2026-53 (the 3.86% sales tax option), a trial short-term rental license for major regional events, and resolutions urging 'Yes' votes on a Boulder County property tax increase for child care, the city public safety tax, and a charter amendment requiring voter approval for open space sales.

Housing and Urban Renewal

The Longmont Housing Authority Board of Commissioners (Aug. 18) considered a resolution to issue multifamily housing revenue bonds and authorize carryforward allocation, discussed bad debt write-offs, and accepted a resignation as contracted property manager at Zinnia. The Longmont Urban Renewal Authority Board met July 21 to consider three Tax Increment Revenue Agreements. Local Licensing Authority: License transfers and special event permit
