Stanton City Council weighs trash rate hike, mayor appointment; no decisions published yet
The Stanton City Council met twice in the past two weeks — on Aug. 11 and Aug. 18 — to consider a solid waste rate increase, a tennis court renovation, a possible mayoral appointment, and other items. Minutes from both meetings have not yet been published, so no final votes or decisions are confirmed. The council's next regular meeting, scheduled for Aug. 25, has been canceled.
Solid waste rate increase
The council held a public hearing on Resolution 2026-33, which would set maximum solid waste collection rates for CR&R, the city's franchise hauler. The proposed increases are 3.5% for residential customers and 8.3% for commercial customers. The item was on the agenda for the Aug. 11 special and joint regular meeting.
Tennis court renovation
The council considered approving a final construction cost of $389,165 for the Stanton Central Park tennis court renovation, with A2Z Construct, Inc. as the contractor. The project was listed on the consent calendar for the Aug. 11 meeting.
Monroe Avenue improvements
The council also considered a license agreement with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) for improvements to Monroe Avenue between Rose and Flower. The project budget would increase by $10,000 to $2,060,000, with a $10,000 donation from ShareMyCoach noted in one agenda summary.
Vacant property and group home ordinances
Two ordinances were on the Aug. 11 agenda: Ordinance 1171, which would amend vacant and foreclosed property registration requirements, and Ordinance 1174, which would allow group homes for disabled persons. Both were listed for consideration but no action has been published.
Mayor appointment and election cancellation
At a special meeting on Aug. 18, the council considered Resolution 2026-34 to appoint David John Shawver as mayor for a four-year term and cancel the Nov. 3, 2026, general election for that office. The cancellation is permitted under California Elections Code Section 10229 because only one candidate filed. The agenda noted an estimated $22,000 savings if the election is canceled. The council could instead choose to hold the election with the sole nominee.
The same meeting included closed-session discussions on pending litigation (Tina-Pacific Residents Association v. City of Stanton, case G065384) and real estate negotiations for 40 or more properties on Tina Way and Pacific Avenue in Anaheim.
Community Services Commission
The Community Services Commission met Aug. 17 and received a staff report on a Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program grant opportunity for renovating Dotson Park. The commission did not vote on the application; the recommended action was to receive and file the report. The commission also approved minutes from its June 15 meeting and heard a director's report covering HazMat incident response, summer meals, park signs, National Night Out, and the FRC open house.
Planning Commission canceled
The Aug. 19 Planning Commission meeting was canceled. The next meeting is set for Sept. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 7800 Katella Avenue.
