Smithfield Town Council to weigh $80K in contracts; boards review zoning and historic changes
Smithfield's three advisory boards met last week and this week, but none published decisions; all were agenda-only sessions. The Town Council holds a work session today, Aug. 24, to consider two invoices totaling $80,345.16 and other operational items.
Planning Commission (Aug. 11)
The Planning Commission discussed a proposed Land Use Matrix for Light Industrial (I-1), Commercial Industrial (C-I), and Heavy Industrial (I-2) zones. It also considered an Entrance Corridor Overlay application for TPIN 21-01-070B by 757 Building Company. The board heard public comments and approved the July 14 meeting minutes. No decisions were published.
Board of Historic and Architectural Review (Aug. 18)
The board reviewed a demolition request and four material change applications affecting historic-district structures. The demolition request was for a single-family dwelling at 151 Riverview Avenue (non-contributing), applicant Nina Howard. Material changes included a roof change at 216 Cary Street (contributing, applicant Maury Talbert), a front porch stoop change at 112 Jericho Road (contributing, applicant David Revell), and a siding change at 360-368 Main Street (contributing, applicant Yusuf Atay). The board also approved July 21 minutes. No decisions were published.
Board of Zoning Appeals (Aug. 18)
The board held a public hearing on a special exception use application by Jeffrey D. Brooks for 320 Grace Street (TPIN: 21A-01-132). It also approved June 16 minutes and heard public and board comments. No decisions were published.
Town Council Work Session (Aug. 24)
The Town Council work session will receive operational updates from the Police Department and Treasurer, including July activity and financial reports. The agenda includes two invoices over $20,000: $47,560.00 to Virginia Control & Electrical Services LLC for a bypass pump installation at Plaza PS, and $32,785.16 to Axon Enterprise Inc. for the Police Department. The council will also discuss an archaeological investigation of town-owned property and further planning commission guidance.
