Storey County meetings: $10.9M construction contract, transmission line disputes on the agenda
Storey County's recent and upcoming meetings center on major infrastructure spending and energy projects, though most actions remain pending because minutes have not yet been published for the July sessions.
Board of Commissioners — July 7
The Board of Commissioners met July 7 to consider a $4,995,661 road rehabilitation project, with the award proposed for SNC Construction and DOWL Engineering. Also on the agenda were collective bargaining agreements with the Storey County Sheriff's Supervisory Association and Firefighters Local 4227, and several water rights applications (94788, 95008T–95010T, 94778–94779) seeking to change points of diversion between Washoe and Storey Counties.
The board was also scheduled to review a special use permit amendment for Asia Union Electronic Chemicals to add N-Methylpyrrolidone (nMP) at 1400 Waltham Way, and a grant of easement to TRI General Improvement District for two water tanks on county land at 8665 USA Parkway. Minutes for this meeting have not yet been published, so outcomes are not confirmed.
Local Emergency Planning Committee — July 8
The LEPC was scheduled to elect a Vice-Chair and Secretary for the July 2026 to July 2027 term. The agenda also included a review of hazardous materials incidents since April 2026, an overview of 2026 emergency preparedness training opportunities, and the Emergency Management Director's report. Planning Commission — July 16
The Planning Commission met July 16 to consider NV Energy's Special Use Permit Application No. 2026-029, which seeks approval to construct, operate, and maintain 30 miles of 345-kilovolt transmission lines across unincorporated county land. The application would cross 20 parcels — roughly 820 acres — owned by Sunny Hills Ranchos, which submitted an objection citing a lack of the required property-owner affidavit and constitutional taking concerns.
County staff noted that NV Energy has no easements or written permission for the affected parcels. The commission had the options to deny, condition, or defer the application pending owner authorization and compliance with county code findings.
The same meeting included additional special use permit requests: SUP 2026-033 to increase a communication tower height by 12 feet at 662 Italy Drive; SUP 2026-032 for transmission tower heights up to 180 feet, exceeding the 75-foot limit, across multiple APNs in McCarran; SUP 2026-017 for a natural gas-fueled electrical generating facility at 8990 USA Parkway; and SUP 2026-018 for a natural gas-fueled electrical generating facility at 2300 Peru Drive.
