Sulphur Council awards $462K fire hydrant contract, authorizes investigations
The Sulphur City Council awarded a $462,083 contract for the 2026 Fire Hydrant Replacement Project and authorized investigations into city hiring practices and potential public bid law violations at its Aug. 10 regular meeting. The council also adopted a safety action plan, set septage hauler rates, and condemned three dilapidated properties.
City Council
The council awarded the fire hydrant contract to C1 Services for $462,083 in a 5-0 vote. It also adopted Ordinance No. 2028, authorizing a Safe Streets for All Safety Action Plan with the SWLA Regional Planning Commission, and Ordinance No. 2029, setting septage hauler rates, both by 5-0 votes.
In a series of 5-0 votes, the council condemned properties at 461 Starlin St., 1331 Stanford St., and 312 Beglis Pkwy. It granted a six-month extension for 319 Landry St. and a 60-day extension for 170 Starlin St., and denied condemnation for 1018 West Verdine.
The council adopted Resolution No. 3704 requesting an investigation into Vexus utility use, with findings due Nov. 9, 2026, and Resolution No. 3705 accepting substantial completion of the Municipal Complex abatement and demolition. Both passed 5-0.
Earlier that day, the council held a special session and unanimously introduced an ordinance amending Chapter 2, Article 2, Section 2-16 of the Code of Ordinances to establish council meeting dates, times, and location. The ordinance was filed for public inspection, and the mayor was authorized to publish a public notice in the American Press. A public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 24.
Board of Zoning Adjustment
At its Aug. 17 meeting, the Board of Zoning Adjustment approved a variance for Justin Quebodeaux at 202 Lynn Lane to build an open carport 12 feet from the front property line, instead of the required 30 feet, in a 4-1 vote. The board unanimously approved a variance for Rite-Way Developers Inc. to allow Lots 4 and 5 on Margo Lane to be smaller than the required 10,000 square feet (Lot 4 at 9,187 sq ft, Lot 5 at 9,485 sq ft). A request by Casey Peveto for a parking variance was removed from the agenda.
Coming up
The City Council will hold three special meetings on Aug. 24, 2026, at 501 Willow Avenue:
- A public hearing on Ordinance ORD48-26, which would set council meeting dates, times, and location (second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m., with a relocation option to 401 Arena Road).
- A meeting to consider appointing Read Ellender as Interim Director of Information Technology and Lindsey Delouche as Interim Director of Finance.
- A meeting to consider a resolution requesting an Attorney General's opinion on potential public bid law violations by the city.
All three meetings are scheduled to follow a 5:30 p.m. special meeting at the temporary Council Chambers, 501 Willow Avenue.
