Waterford boards weigh tourism grant, road plan, Fire Station lease
Waterford village boards met over the past two weeks to consider several financial and infrastructure items, but no final decisions have been published yet. Agendas and minutes are pending for all meetings, so the items below are under discussion, not yet approved.
Village Board considers $12,000 tourism grant and PTO policy
At its Aug. 10 meeting, the Village Board reviewed a proposed $12,000 allocation to the Waterford Area Chamber of Commerce from the Hotel Tax Fund for tourism promotion. The funds would come from savings in other hotel tax accounts, including $3,000 from Movies in the Park, $2,500 from grants, and $4,200 from the marketing budget. The board also considered an amended PTO donation policy that would remove a 24-hour cap and set an 80-hour minimum donor balance, and discussed a claim from Angela D'Alie for vehicle paint damage (claim #WM000511910051). The board entered closed session to discuss employee performance and potential property purchases, including redevelopment of the Fire Station on N 2nd Street.
The Finance, Taxes and Insurance Committee, also meeting Aug. 10, recommended the $12,000 allocation to the Village Board. Staff noted the funds must be used for tourism promotion per state law, and the Chamber would use them for printing maps, holiday shopping guides, and ads. Staff will evaluate making this an ongoing annual contribution in the 2027 budget.
Village Board weighs five-year road plan and possible referendum
At its Aug. 17 meeting, the Village Board discussed a five-year roads and infrastructure plan for streets with PASER ratings of 1-3. The administrator recommended adopting the plan without pursuing an advisory referendum on the November 3, 2026 ballot. If a referendum were held, the estimated property tax impact would be up to $48 per year for a $300,000 home without utility burial, or $183 per year with burial. Burying utilities along Main Street would cost an estimated $4 million. No action was taken.
Public Works Committee reviews Fire Station lease and road projects
The Public Works Committee on Aug. 18 discussed a potential lease of Fire Station #1 by the Jr Wolverine Baseball Club, which proposes $52,050 in facility improvements. The committee also considered adding an osprey nest platform in Whitford Park and a street closure for the WUHS Homecoming Parade. Reports covered the East Main Street and Jefferson Street reconstruction projects, both planned for the November 2026 referendum, and the Well 6 water project, including a $6,000 change order for removing a caved section of the well.
Plan Commission reviews basketball academy and subdivision plans
The Plan Commission met Aug. 19 to review preliminary plans for the Rise Up Basketball Academy at 402 6th Street — a 10,890 sq ft building with 35 parking stalls (2 ADA) on a 1.08-acre lot — and Bielinski's Park Point subdivision plat. The commission also reviewed preliminary building design for 407 S 6th Street by Full House Construction. The meeting included approval of the May 20, 2026 minutes. No decisions were reported.
