Planning Board to consider text amendment for infill overlay and ordinance updates
The Planning Board will hold a special meeting to discuss and possibly recommend a proposed text amendment to the Rutherfordton Development Ordinance. The amendment would create a new Neighborhood Infill Residential Overlay district, allow flag lots, update driveway and parking standards, and make other technical changes.
- Creation of a Neighborhood Infill Residential Overlay (NIRO) district to allow greater infill development in the town core
- Introduction of flag lots with specific standards for lot width and front setback
- Minimum driveway separation of 47 feet along streets in certain districts to preserve on-street parking

The Rutherfordton Historic Preservation Commission met on February 12, 2026 at Town Hall. The commission approved the minutes from the December 12, 2025 meeting after correcting a motion record. The Commission considered the minutes of the December 12th meeting. One correction was noted,

Public hearing on rezoning 7.98 acres at Green Street & D. Mathis Drive
The Town Council will hold a public hearing on rezoning application REZ‑01‑26 for 7.98 acres at Green Street and D. Mathis Drive. Section 1. Pursuant to the Town of Rutherfordton Code of Ordinances, Chapter 12 – Emergency
Services, Chapter 166A of the North Carolina General Statutes, and Article 36A of Chapter 14 of
the General Statutes, I have determined that a State of Emergency exists in the Town of
Rutherfordton due to Winter Storm Fern and the threatening, destructive conditions that may
cause injury or loss of life to persons and significant damage to property.
Section 2. I hereby proclaim a State of Emergency in the Town of Rutherfordton.
Section 3. I order all Town law enforcement officers, employees, and other emergency
management personnel under my authority to cooperate in enforcing and implementing the
provisions of the Town Emergency Ordinances outlined in Chapter 12 of the Rutherfordton Code

Historic Preservation Commission reviews sculpture COA for Overmountain Men memorial
