Zoning Board Denies Tobacco and Vape Shop Variance on E State Street
The Athens Board of Zoning Appeals denied a request to allow a tobacco and vape establishment at 79 E State Street within 500 feet of a church or other licensed retailer. The motion failed on a 4-0 vote at the board's July 14 meeting, the only item this week backed by official minutes rather than an agenda alone.
The board also approved minutes from its March 10, 2026 meeting, passing that motion 3-0.
Municipal Arts Commission
The Athens Municipal Arts Commission met July 8 to review a draft letter supporting City Council's ordinance designating Lasher Hall as a local historic landmark. Council passed the ordinance on June 1. Commissioners also discussed recommendations to the mayor, formation of a local arts group coalition, and plans for ACAMF participation in August, when no meeting is scheduled. Disabilities Commission and Committees
Three Disabilities Commission-related meetings took place the week of July 14. The Outreach and Communications Committee met July 14 to brainstorm social media posts, including community member profiles and educational notes, and to hold a conversation with the StoryTelling Institute. The committee also revisited a newsletter idea and membership recruitment. No votes or decisions were scheduled.
The full Commission on Disabilities met July 15 to review a priority matrix used to determine accessibility and advocacy priorities, receive updates on the Athena Award nomination process, and hear bylaws committee updates. Members also planned for guests from Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities at the next meeting.
The Accessibility and Advocacy Committee met July 17 to review the priority matrix, discuss Uptown improvement plans, and review the process for when the Commission on Disabilities is requested for feedback. All three meetings were agenda-only; minutes were not yet published.
Shade Tree Commission
The Shade Tree Commission met July 15 to consider tree permits and landscape ordinance issues. Items listed included a Title 33 tree permit review for the Carpenter Street tree list and Johnny Appleseed Park, Stimson Bike Path planting replacements, limb maintenance at 6 S College Street, tree removal at 17 Euclid, and Uptown limb removal during the Boogie event. The commission also discussed fall plantings and an Arbor Day event, including Westside and OU Soccer field plantings, and considered an application for appointment by Chris Hedges. Recreation Advisory Board
The Recreation Advisory Board met July 16 to discuss Lifeguard Appreciation Day on July 31, an October meeting with the City Planner, filling executive roles, approval of new member nominations, and preschool playground input. Minutes were not yet published.
