Churchill County boards weigh road contract, senior reimbursements, land-use changes
Churchill County boards met this week to consider a $2.76 million road engineering contract, a $310,000 parking lot bid, and several other items. Minutes have not yet been published, so no outcomes are confirmed. Upcoming meetings will address land-use changes and wildlife policies.
County Commission considers road project, grants
The Board of County Commissioners met Aug. 6 and had on its agenda:
- Approval of a $2,758,000 engineering contract for the Moody Lane to Coleman Road Connector Project.
- Award of a $310,000 parking lot construction contract (PWP-CH-2026-315) to A&K Earthmovers.
- A $20,200 grant to the Churchill County School District for youth mental health programs.
- A $19,500 grant to the Churchill Community Coalition for substance abuse education.
- TDR26-2, a conservation easement application for a 40-acre property at 1975 Berney Road.

Senior citizens coalition to vote on reimbursements
The Coalition for Senior Citizens held a special meeting Aug. 4. The agenda included:
- Approval of minutes from the June 8, 2026 meeting.
- Discussion and approval of funds for desserts on Aug. 21 at the William N. Pennington Life Center.
- Reimbursement to Karla Kent for $65.29 in root beer float event purchases.
- Reimbursement to Karla Kent for $256.25 for a business license filing fee.
- An update on new credit cards for Coalition purchases.

Election canvass and highway reports
On July 29, commissioners met to consider the canvass of the special election held July 21, 2026. That agenda item was listed for discussion and potential action.
The Board of Highway Commissioners met Aug. 6 and reviewed the monthly departmental report from Road Supervisor Gary Fowkes, along with July updates and accomplishments. The board also considered approval of minutes from its July 2 meeting.

The board will also discuss a letter to the Department of Wildlife regarding blood trailing dogs or thermal imaging drones and a board vacancy recruitment update.
