Claremont Council reviews 2027 budget, 6% levy increase proposal
The Claremont City Council this month discussed the proposed 2027 city budget and property tax levy, including a resolution that would raise the levy by 6% over 2026. The council also considered a $6,220 donation from the Chamber of Commerce, new meeting decorum rules, and a snowplow purchase. No official decisions have been published yet, as minutes from the Aug. 4 meeting have not been released.
2027 budget and levy
At a July 28 workshop, the council reviewed revenue and expenditure budgets for the general fund, fire fund, water fund, and sewer fund, and considered levy increase options of 7%, 8%, or 9% over the 2026 levy. The proposed 2027 general fund revenue budget is $573,999, with expenditures of $546,596. The fire fund revenue budget is $112,810, with expenditures listed at $546,596. The water fund revenue budget is $220,900, with expenditures of $0, and the sewer fund revenue budget is $306,949, also with expenditures of $0.
On Aug. 4, the council took up Resolution 26-17, which would approve the proposed 2027 tax levy and budget with a 6% increase. The agenda also included discussion of a snowplow purchase, rules of decorum for council meetings, and a decision on whether to waive liability coverage in the LMC insurance renewal. The recommendation was not to waive the coverage.
Donation and other business
The council considered Resolution 26-16, accepting a $6,220 donation from the Claremont Area Chamber of Commerce for Hogfest. Also on the agenda were proposed rules of decorum for respectful participation at council meetings and reports on snowplow options and council members' LMC conference experiences.
