Adel Council approves festival permits; discusses public safety facility timeline
The Adel City Council on Aug. 4 unanimously approved a consent agenda that included a 5-day special Class C retail alcohol license for Lucky Wife Wine Slushies and the Adel Partners Chamber for the Sweet Corn Festival, which began Aug. 7, and a sound permit for the IA Street Rod All American Car Show on Sept. 5. The council also made no appointments to the Board of Adjustment because no applications were received.
Committee of the Whole discusses public safety facility referendum (July 29)
The Committee of the Whole discussed a potential November 2026 or 2027 referendum for a fire facility project using the Construction Manager at Risk delivery method. A formal decision on the timeline is needed in May. The committee also heard a presentation on landscape improvements for downtown and city entrances, discussed a proposed false alarm fee for excessive fire alarms, and received an update on the Rapids Street Reconstruction project. No formal votes were taken; all items were for discussion only.
Committee of the Whole reviews street projects, wage study, trail dedication (Aug. 4)
The Committee of the Whole discussed several items without taking formal votes. Topics included updates on the Rapids Street reconstruction, a proposed mill-and-fill project for Grove Street and 15th Street, a wage and classification study proposal, and a trail dedication for Southbridge subdivisions. Staff recommended selecting DDA for the wage and classification study, with formal consideration set for the July 14 council meeting. The council agreed to require completion of a trail connection to Highway 169 as part of the Southbridge trail dedication. A right-of-way excavation permit ordinance was also discussed, with no action taken.
Council to consider trail connection and construction manager (Aug. 7 agenda)
The Aug. 7 council meeting agenda includes a public hearing and Resolution 26-85 for the Adel Recreation Trail Connection Project from Evans Park to the Raccoon River Valley Trail, Resolution 26-86 awarding the contract for that project, and Resolution 26-87 selecting a Construction Manager at Risk for the new Public Safety Facility. The council will also consider a contract with Access Systems for IT services and Resolution 26-83 consenting to termination of the 28E entity of the South Dallas County Sanitary Landfill Agency. Minutes from this meeting have not yet been published.
Library Board to review policies (Aug. 7 agenda)
The Adel Library Board agenda includes approval of minutes and claims, review and potential approval of a library clerk job description and circulation policy, and discussion of allowing outside groups to store items at the library. The board will also consider an RVTV event on Sept. 11, 2026, and watch a board training video. No minutes have been published yet.
