Guilford County Board weighs $39.5M school boost, contracts, and legislative agenda
The Guilford County Board of Commissioners met Aug. 6 to consider a $39.5 million increase for the Erwin Montessori School project, along with several contracts and grant applications. The board also held a work session to discuss legislative priorities and economic incentives. No final votes have been published; the items were on the agenda and minutes are not yet available.
School construction funding
The board considered amending the Erwin Montessori School capital project ordinance, which would raise its total budget to $51,031,620. The proposed $39,476,006 increase would come from bond proceeds and cover higher site preparation and onsite costs. The increase is offset by savings from two completed elementary projects: a $1,186,695 decrease for Claxton Elementary and a $2,100,960 decrease for Peeler-Hampton Elementary. The new facility is planned to serve 350 students in a 71,361-square-foot building.
Contracts and grants
Several contracts and grant applications were on the agenda:
- A contract with UNC-G for the Tenant Eviction and Mediation (TEAM) program, valued at $860,866.
- A contract renewal with Toshiba Business Solutions for copier services, not to exceed $390,000.
- A contract with NeuroAgile Leadership & Workforce Consulting (Allies 4 Outcomes) for $322,000.
- An application for a $750,000 grant under the Local Law Enforcement Grants for Cybercrimes Program.
These items were listed for discussion and possible action, but no outcomes have been recorded.
Work session: legislative priorities and incentives
The board also held a work session to discuss three topics: establishing a legislative agenda and lobbying framework, receiving a presentation on updated economic development incentive regulations (including the state's C-PACE program), and reviewing the impact of the recently signed state budget, SB 257 (Session Law 2026-41), signed July 7, 2026. Staff were directed to submit legislative priorities to the NCACC and to schedule a meeting with the local delegation. The board also discussed bringing forward a resolution of intent to support the C-PACE program. No final votes were scheduled.
