Miami County Commission approves fire gear, health equipment; authorizes up to $2.8 million in fire apparatus financing

The Miami County Board of County Commissioners approved a new Health Department fee schedule and authorized purchases of wildland fire gear and health department equipment at its Sept. 30, 2026 meeting, and authorized soliciting financing bids of up to $2.8 million for four rural fire apparatus, according to official minutes. Each of those items passed 5-0.

Fire and emergency services

Commissioners authorized the solicitation of financing bids up to $2.8 million for four rural fire apparatus, on a 5-0 vote. They also authorized a $20,614.00 purchase of 13 sets of wildland bunker gear for Rural Fire District #1, also 5-0.

The same meeting's study session agenda had listed a Rural FD #1 capital replacement request for financing and a purchase authorization for MIFD1 - Paola Wildland Gear as discussion items, along with a county fleet insurance report related to an April 15, 2026 hail storm.

Health Department

Commissioners approved the Health Department Fee Schedule on a 5-0 vote. They separately authorized a $21,448.28 purchase of seven workstations and nine docking stations for the Health Department, 5-0. Planning Commission, Oct. 6

Miami County approves airport taxiway project; 2027 budget hearings set for Aug. 26

The Miami County Board of County Commissioners approved a contract to rehabilitate the west taxilane and hangar ramps at the county airport, a project funded largely by the Kansas Department of Transportation. The board also held study sessions on a runway extension and a fireworks permit, and will hold public hearings next week on the 2027 county and fire district budgets.

Airport rehabilitation approved

The project is a KDOT project with a 90/10 cost split, with KDOT reimbursing up to $850,000.

Study sessions on runway, fireworks, and stop sign

On Aug. 19, the board held a study session covering an update from Miami County Fire District 1, a project authorization for the airport runway extension (Project 26-03-AP, item 707), an environmental review agreement with Olsson, Inc., a stop sign resolution on 239th Street and State Line Road, and a fireworks permit (2026-011-TP) for Wald Fireworks/Dancefestopia. Miami County board sends RV park rezoning back to planners, approves event center permit

The Miami County Board of County Commissioners voted 4-1 on July 29 to send a rezoning application for a 50-acre RV park back to the Planning Commission for further review. The Planning Commission had previously recommended denial by a 5-3 vote. The board also approved a conditional use permit for an event center at 22600 State Line Road and tabled an IT infrastructure agreement for one week.

The Miami County Board of Commissioners approved a $10,968 purchase of five XR60 5G routers for EMS vehicles and a new five-year Motorola service agreement at its July 22 meeting, both by 4-0 votes.

July 22: Decisions on file
