Morgan County boards weigh tax appeals, radio system, zoning changes
In the past two weeks, three Morgan County boards met to consider items ranging from a public safety radio system to property tax appeals and zoning changes. All three meetings were held as scheduled, but minutes have not yet been published, so no official decisions have been reported.
Board of Commissioners & Building Authority (Aug. 4)
The Board of Commissioners and Building Authority met to discuss new information on a complete public safety radio system and an assurance contract for property tax collection. The agenda also included a change order for the PSC Roof Replacement, with an amount up to $25,000 from SPLOST. Commissioners were set to discuss the Recreation Commission and Advisory Board, and to approve minutes from July meetings, including three millage rate public hearings.
Board of Assessors (July 28)
The Board of Assessors considered approval of June 2026 minutes and a production/activity report. Chief Appraiser Robert Bailey briefed the board on his attendance at the GAAO conference July 19-22 in Jekyll Island. Julie McCart reported on 2026 personal property tax assessment notices mailed June 10, with an appeal deadline of July 25. The board also heard a voluntary CUVA removal for parcel 021-161 and was presented with the 2nd through 5th rounds of 2026 appeals. The level of assessment was reported at 38.86% overall, with residential at 38.68%, agricultural at 40.04%, commercial at 38.16%, and industrial at 38.65%.
Planning Commission (Aug. 6)
The Planning Commission considered four text amendments to the county's development regulations and zoning ordinance. These included adding a tree ordinance, reorganizing the development regulations, modifying Chapter 7.32 Event Facilities, and updating Table 4.1 Permitted and Conditional Uses. The meeting also included approval of prior minutes and a staff report.
