Salt Lake City sets property tax hearing for Aug. 11; recent council agendas await minutes
Salt Lake City residents face a consequential week ahead: the City Council has scheduled an Aug. 11 public hearing on a proposed property tax increase that would generate an additional $13,793,967 in annual property tax revenue for the Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget. For a $703,000 residence, the city portion of property taxes would rise from $1,090.74 to $1,190.88; for a $703,000 business, from $1,983.16 to $2,165.24. The proposal represents a 9.16% increase in budgeted property tax revenue above last year's revenue, excluding eligible new growth.
All recent meetings listed below were published as agendas only; minutes have not yet been posted, so outcomes and vote tallies cannot be confirmed.
City Council — July 21
The Council's July 21 agenda included a scheduled vote on an alley vacation near 567 East Warnock Avenue, along with public hearings on the six-year Capital Asset Plan (File Z 20260102) and the Capital Improvement Program. The CIP covers construction, purchase, or renovation of city-owned physical structures with a useful life of at least five years and a cost of $50,000 or more. Council approval of project-specific funding is due by September 1, 2026.
Consent items on the agenda included setting hearing dates for several items: the Ballpark Zoning Map and Text Amendment, which would rezone multiple properties to mixed-use (hearing set for Aug. 18); a text amendment limiting non-residential water use exemptions to 200,000 gallons per day; the Northwest Community Plan covering Rose Park, Fairpark, Jordan Meadows, Poplar Grove, and Westpointe; and a liquor proximity waiver for Silverside Deli at 2122 South Highland Drive.
The Council was also briefed on a new regulatory framework for police Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR), and received a two-year report on affordable housing incentives showing only two projects completed.
Police Property Disposal — July 20
The Salt Lake City Police Department posted notice that unclaimed evidence and property would be auctioned, donated, or otherwise disposed of on July 20, 2026. Items include firearms and ammunition, electronics such as laptops and cellphones, bicycles and scooters, identification documents, and domestic and foreign currency found at the 200 E Block of 8th Ave. The notice stated reasonable attempts had been made to contact owners.
Library Board — July 27
The Library Board agenda included a cladding award recommendation for the Marmalade branch and a Paulsen Construction RFP, a lease update for Year Up United, contract recommendations for vendors Faronics, Yamas, Communico, and RBM, a data sharing agreement with SLCPD, and an update to the Capital Asset Management and Non-Capitalized Asset Control Policy.
Planning Division Open Houses — July 28
The Planning Division hosted online open houses on three projects: a two-story retail building at 522 S 400 W as part of the Silo Park mixed-use development (PLNPCM2026-00568); a Mayor's petition to update Planned Development procedures with community benefits requirements and two tiers of review (PLNPCM2026-00611); and a rezone request at 2475-2493 E 1700 S to change 7 parcels totaling 1.62 acres from MU-2 and R-1-7000 to MU-3 for mixed-use development including 19 townhomes (PLNPCM2026-00546 & PLNPCM2026-00547).
Nonprofit Fee Waiver Hearing — July 27
The Department of Community and Neighborhoods held an informal public hearing on nonprofit fee waiver requests from CDCU.
